Virtualization brings changes the way everyone should look at technology in the future. Virtualization creates a "virtual" version of something (generally looking at hardware, operating system, storage, networks, security) on a physical device. This is important because virtualization can take numerous physical systems and move them on one system. This would decrease the necessity for numerous servers to be running at the same time saving on hardware purchases, electricity as well as wiring. One single physical device can run an Application Server, Domain Controller (Primary as well as Secondary), DNS server, Print Server, Web Server, Database Server, File Server etc. Although not always recommended to have all of these systems in a single Virtual Environment due to having a single point of failure, this can be accomplished (having all of these systems in a single location requires assurance from a well-planned Disaster Recovery Plan - in case the physical system does fail). Virtualization can also create a way to ensure that updates, upgrades and changes to a system does not have undesired effects on the infrastructure and users.

Many companies (VMWare, Microsoft, Citrix, Oracle etc.) have released virtualization software (Hypervisors) that can be downloaded and installed for free (many are missing advanced features but most of these advanced features are not required for small to medium sized businesses). Our Disaster Recovery Solutions can help create secondary locations where even if the primary location run solely on physical servers the secondary location would be virtualized and ready to be turned on in case of a disaster quickly. This secondary location can be tested regularly to ensure the Disaster Recovery Plan is feasible and to test the overall Recover Time (RTO under the Business Continuity Plan).

Why Virtualize?

In some cases Virtualization is something that may not be necessary. Offices that only require one system - one application and one storage location for applications (micro to small medium sized businesses) may not have a need for multiple virtualized systems. When NOT To Virtualize?

Although Virtualization is a great way to build an infrastructure that is versatile, reliable and available there are times when Virtualization may not be the best option.

  1. Applications/operating systems with license/support agreements that don't permit virtualization.
  2. Systems that require extreme performance.
  3. Anything with a dongle/required physical hardware.
  4. Anything on which your physical environment depends.
  5. Anything that must be secured.
  6. Anything that is already a mess… or something sentimental.
